Carefully planted gardens and lush natural areas populate Matthaei Botanical Gardens, scattered with isolated benches and connected by calming walking trails. Individual gardens have been teased into intricate shapes, such as the twists and turns of the Alexandra Hicks Herb Knot Garden and the interwoven path and hedge of the Double Helix. The conservatory building houses groupings of plants that cannot survive in the northern Michigan climate, such as bonsai and tropical plants, and a library containing books on plant care and ecology. Operated by the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the gardens are set a few miles east of campus, between the Marshall Nature Area and the university-run Radrick Farms Golf Course.
Open daily 8:00 a.m. - dusk; Conservatory building is closed through October 2007.
Free.
